I think there is a real stigma attached to this question and its going to take some time for society to grow accustomed to the reality of the spectrum being more than a lable. I am willing.. but I have found it falls on deaf ears unless... there i...

Dear LDS Friends,
Happy 2009! We rolled into a new year very quickly at my house. Two new grand babies in 2008 and my baby turned SWEET SIXTEEN! Wow my driving lessons are not easy!! I am a convert to the LDS church since 1991. It has brought me great joy and great strength in my times of need. Heaven knows where I would be with out the church Maybe STILL Nebraska!!
I have hopes of many changes in 2009 as I as starting a new venture. I am a school psychologist and an autism specialist. I have left the public school system to open an Autism Center. I don't want just a job anymore. I want to change lives. I have felt the pain as I had to be the one to break the news to many families that their children were on the Autism Spectrum. This was actually the easy part. The hardest part was giving them resources as to where they could get help for their family members. I have spent the last five years getting training in Autism Therapies especially those that involve the family so they can learn how to reach out to their loved one and remarkably be loved back. I love what I do. My goal is to help end the chaos and provide understanding. I don't choose to say CURE Autism, because I believe autism is a subculture rather than a disease. Heavenly Father has a great purpose for people on the spectrum and I don't believe it is to fix Autism. It is for us to learn how to reach out and love and love like Jesus loved for us to make them a part of our world as well as we be included in theirs.
I have started an Autism Group on here. Please feel free to join it. Together we will learn from each other. I will post articles and information that I find informative and interesting. I hope that you will feel free to do the same.
God Bless and Happy New Year, In the Name of Jesus
Karen

Autism A Financial Burden

Study Shows Families' Financial Strain
From Autism

The Associated Press is.gd/9KIt

More than half a million U.S. children have autism with costly health care needs that often put an unprecedented financial strain on their families, national data show.
Compared with parents whose youngsters have chronic health care needs but not autism, those with autistic children are three times more likely to have to quit their jobs or reduce work hours to care for their kids. They pay more for their kids' h… Continue

A Beautiful And Heart Warming Story - Hurricane of Autism - The Cone of Uncertainty

The Cone of Uncertainty By Shelley Reynolds

Louisa May Alcott once stated, "I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship."
Over the last ten years, I have been learning how to sail my ship in rough waters from the Hurricane of Autism blowing into my home in 1998 with the diagnosis of my son, Liam, to literal hurricanes like Andrew, Katrina, Rita and now, Gustav. During the Weather Channel's updates as Gustav entered the Gulf of Mexico, they threw out a new term again a… Continue

Karen,

I am back in the saddle again. Sorry I've been out of touch. The surgery took a little more out of me than I thought it would. I'm doing way better than my doctor expected and not nearly as well as I had expected. Anyway, how are things going?

Karen,

I'm so sorry I missed connecting with you at Dan's concert. I ended up being too sick to go. What a bummer. Did you make it? Doesn't he do a fantastic concert. I really love his voice. Daniel Beck is going to be the next greatest thing in the music industry, I think.

Merry Christmas, Karen!

That sounds funny about the ward. My ward is getting older now too. Strange. My husband and I had 7 kids, and now there are none, so times change. BYW, I am not very familiar with this neighborhood thing and when I clicked on reply to comment, I thought I'd be able to see what you had written, but I couldn't. Is there someplace that is displayed? Oh well, gotta run. I'm actually in Chicago visiting my daughter and her family so won't have time again to reply until I return home on Wed. Thanks.

Hi, I'm glad you wrote. Yes, it is nice to hear from someone who lives close by. I read your entry and am very sorry to hear about your daughter in law. That must have been a very difficult time. I hope things are going a little better for you now. I do not know much about autism, although my daughter in law's nephew has just been diagnosed with a mild form of autism. It sounds like you are doing a great thing in education people.

Spotlight on "Forged in the Refiner's Fire" by Candace E. Salima

Why do bad things happen? Is there a purpose when we face a bad trial? As mortals, we can be compared to ore, such as gold and silver. Ore that is unrefined is generally impure and undesirable. Only ore that is crushed -- and then refined by fire -- becomes beautiful, pure, precious and valuable. This book was written to help you see the results of the Ultimate Refiner, the Lord, in your own life.

Within these pages, people from all walks of life share their stories of triumph over tragedy. More importantly, they reveal how they were strengthened as they passed through the Refiner's fire. They became more precious, and so can you. Look for the experiences of vocalist Merrill Osmond, LDS writers Shirley Bahlmann, Elizabeth Cheever, Willard Boyd Gardner, Tristi Pinkston, and Candace E. Salima, renowned columnist Muriel Sluyter and several people across the nation who are ranchers, housewives, writers in the national market and more.

Candace E. Salima partnered with Elizabeth Cheever to co-author this book. They feel very privileged to have been the ones to bring this story to the world.
