Alison Palmer: yourLDSNeighborhood Book Reviewer

Alison Palmer has been working as a freelance writer for the past seven years. She has written for just about every market you can think of, including: religious, secular, adult, children’s, commercial, and consumer publications. She also spent some time as the acting editor of several emagazines. Alison has an addiction to the written word, reading an average of four new books each week, and actively looks for titles that uplift, inform, and entertain so that she can introduce others to these books as well.

Alison will be moderating this discussion group. So post questions, thoughts, whatever and she'll respond. Feel free to initiate discussion and participate in the most already posted.

My pleasure LdsNana. We all need more of those shoring up moments as the rains just seem to keep coming these days, don't they?

Thank you for this uplifting book review of "All Rain, No Mud". I enjoyed your comments very much.

I can think of a few times in my life, that if my personal testimony had not been shored up, that I might have been washed away in the storms of life.

I liked 1-3. I had to review the first one for our library patrons and I approached it from that perspective thinking I wouldn't necessarily like it, but I did like it. My expectations weren't too high, given that it was her first book, and there were some areas that I felt fell short but overall, it was a wonderful first book.
Still haven't gotten around to reading the fourth one yet.
My nieces ages 13 and 15 read them and really enjoyed them also. I agree with Alison about teens reading this series. I don't have girls but if I did, I'd have no problem with them reading them also.

Interestingly, I liked the 4th book best. I thought she improved as a writer, she delivered on all the promises she made in Books 1 through 3 and I enjoyed 4 the most. Just a different opinion.

I always tell people that not everyone will like the same book, if they did, there would be no need for any other books to be written. We all come at life, and books, from a different perspective and as such, enjoy different things.

So that's the end of my philosophizing today.

I enjoyed them. My teen girls enjoyed them. I know many people were disappointed with the last one, however. It definitely wasn't the best of the series. I liked 1 and 3 the best.
If you enjoy romance, you'll be fine with these. I know many people have a problem letting their teens read these, I read a lot of teen books and quite honestly, Myer handles "stuff" much better than many other things my teens could be reading. It's all about common sense and knowing your own children, IMHO

I would love to hear people thoughts on The Twilight Series done by Stephenie Meyer. I am in the process of reading book one

"The Santa Letters" is such a fantastic book. Just make sure you have the Kleenex nearby! I couldn't put it down!

Spotlight on "Forged in the Refiner's Fire" by Candace E. Salima

Why do bad things happen? Is there a purpose when we face a bad trial? As mortals, we can be compared to ore, such as gold and silver. Ore that is unrefined is generally impure and undesirable. Only ore that is crushed -- and then refined by fire -- becomes beautiful, pure, precious and valuable. This book was written to help you see the results of the Ultimate Refiner, the Lord, in your own life.

Within these pages, people from all walks of life share their stories of triumph over tragedy. More importantly, they reveal how they were strengthened as they passed through the Refiner's fire. They became more precious, and so can you. Look for the experiences of vocalist Merrill Osmond, LDS writers Shirley Bahlmann, Elizabeth Cheever, Willard Boyd Gardner, Tristi Pinkston, and Candace E. Salima, renowned columnist Muriel Sluyter and several people across the nation who are ranchers, housewives, writers in the national market and more.

Candace E. Salima partnered with Elizabeth Cheever to co-author this book. They feel very privileged to have been the ones to bring this story to the world.
