Hello everyone. Former USMC here. You have started a fantastic group Moira.

Aleesha,
I'm so sorry I didn't respond immediately when you posted your comment. Frankly, I haven't been on the site in a couple of months. In fact, I only checked in tonight as I was considering deleting the group due to a lack of interest.
I don't know about the military wives that you've talked to but military life isn't easy. Most times, it isn't wonderful at all. This is especially true during times when you're separated from your loved one because of prolonged trainings or deployment.
However, for many of us we married our spouses knowing who and what they were - soldiers. Of course, knowing all of this beforehand doesn't make it any easier. Just know that you're not alone, there are many of us who know exactly how you feel. This was one of the reasons why I started this group - so that we can all be a source of support and strength for each other.
p.s. My husband is still in Iraq so we celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas without him but he did make it home for his 2 week R&R leave in time to celebrate New Year's with us. Hang in there!

This may be way too late in coming, but I wanted to respond anyway. I would LOVE to be a military wife. There is a special camaraderie and support there that is unlike most other things. And it would make me extremely proud to know my husband is serving his country, and thereby also our God. It is not an easy decision to make, and a lot of marriages have suffered--but I think the ones that have are ones where there really wasn't the true support and love there in the first place. It is a great honor. Both my brothers are serving in the military (Air Force and Army), and many of my ancestors also have served.

My husband of almost 7 months is in the Air Force at Basic Training right now. I think we had the worst timing ever in deciding when to do all of this. We are missed our first Thanksgiving (which was also his birthday) together and we are missing all of the Christmas and New year holidays. I am trying so hard to stay strong and I am being very supportive in everything he does, but I have to admit, there have been a few times that I have asked myself if this is really the lifestyle that I want to live. I hear so many people say that it is amazing and that they wouldn't change it for anything, but I am struggling slightly with the whole cituation at the moment. What makes being a military wife or having that lifestyle so wonderful?

Moira,

Jeff Denning was all over CNN, FoxNews and everything about an air marshal story. Maybe that's why he sounded familiar. The garbage hit the fan when he stepped off the plane from Iraq onto American soil. He's really amazing. I need to send him another email and see how he's doing with his book. But it really needs to get out there. I'll be sure to post on a notice on here when its available. Okay?

Thanks Candace, I'm going to have to check that book out and read it. Maybe even buy it for my hubby and send it to him. He's name sounds familiar to me somehow.

Moira and Elizabeth,

I read a manuscript called "Work of Death" by Captain Jeffrey Denning. Fantastic, literally one of the best things I've read. He talks about this very thing, meaning, holding on to the Spirit, righteousness, worthiness and all that good men hold dear and still defending your nation, your city, your neighborhood. He was a cop. Then SWAT. Then a Federal Air Marshal. And he and I connected while he was in Iraq. I think this book is going to be fantastic for everyone, but especially for those who are soldiers, policemen, firemen, etc. All who are forced to faced inhumanity of man against man so that we do have to.

I have such respect for those serving our nation in all these capacities and my gratitude abounds.

Hi Elizabeth and Carolyn,
I'm so happy to hear from both of you. Sometimes it seems as if part of the challenge is finding other LDS families living the life of a military spouse, parent, brother, sister, uncle, grandparent, etc.

Elizabeth, we've had that conversation a few times ourselves. Captain Moroni (a hero of our family, go figure:-) is a wonderful example to our soldiers of faithful men of God doing their duty when called upon to defend their families and country.

Carolyn,
We've been stationed in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Pennsylvania (twice), and Utah. If we do get another overseas assignment, I would love to go to Okinawa. I've heard other military families rave about their time there.

Thank you both for joining and I'm looking forward to hearing more about your military experiences as a military mother and a military spouse. Please feel free to start a discussion as well if you wish to do so.

Spotlight on "Forged in the Refiner's Fire" by Candace E. Salima

Why do bad things happen? Is there a purpose when we face a bad trial? As mortals, we can be compared to ore, such as gold and silver. Ore that is unrefined is generally impure and undesirable. Only ore that is crushed -- and then refined by fire -- becomes beautiful, pure, precious and valuable. This book was written to help you see the results of the Ultimate Refiner, the Lord, in your own life.

Within these pages, people from all walks of life share their stories of triumph over tragedy. More importantly, they reveal how they were strengthened as they passed through the Refiner's fire. They became more precious, and so can you. Look for the experiences of vocalist Merrill Osmond, LDS writers Shirley Bahlmann, Elizabeth Cheever, Willard Boyd Gardner, Tristi Pinkston, and Candace E. Salima, renowned columnist Muriel Sluyter and several people across the nation who are ranchers, housewives, writers in the national market and more.

Candace E. Salima partnered with Elizabeth Cheever to co-author this book. They feel very privileged to have been the ones to bring this story to the world.
