Gaynell Parker: yourLDSNeighborhood Art Expert

Spending years drawing on the sides of boxes and scraps of paper, artist Gaynell Parker was finally able to realize a dream in publishing illustrations for the book, Sorry, the Stork Takes no Returns. Taking art in high school and again in college only reinforced the idea that she didn't see things like everyone else in class, but that didn't disuade her from continuing to explore her talents. Ladybugs are her trademark, and if you get a chance to view her paintings, you'll find one on almost every canvas. Now she spends her summers painting items for the fairs, searching out books to illustrate, and the rest of the year writing -- which is her second passion.

So join in, contributing to the discussions. Post comments, thoughts, questions . . . anything at all. Gaynell will be here to moderate this discussion group and contribute to this discussion group.

Gaynell,

The mountains in full bloom, both spring and fall, is what presents the greatest beauty to me. But other things: a library with shelves and shelves of books (the old British libraries with sliding ladders), the laugh of a child, tiny arms wrapped around your neck and a slobbery kiss on the cheek, a sunset in glory, my husband's smile . . . there is beauty everywhere we choose to see it.

I have to admit, I didn't want to see this movie. It looked, pardon my pun, far too grim.

Spotlight on "Forged in the Refiner's Fire" by Candace E. Salima

Why do bad things happen? Is there a purpose when we face a bad trial? As mortals, we can be compared to ore, such as gold and silver. Ore that is unrefined is generally impure and undesirable. Only ore that is crushed -- and then refined by fire -- becomes beautiful, pure, precious and valuable. This book was written to help you see the results of the Ultimate Refiner, the Lord, in your own life.

Within these pages, people from all walks of life share their stories of triumph over tragedy. More importantly, they reveal how they were strengthened as they passed through the Refiner's fire. They became more precious, and so can you. Look for the experiences of vocalist Merrill Osmond, LDS writers Shirley Bahlmann, Elizabeth Cheever, Willard Boyd Gardner, Tristi Pinkston, and Candace E. Salima, renowned columnist Muriel Sluyter and several people across the nation who are ranchers, housewives, writers in the national market and more.

Candace E. Salima partnered with Elizabeth Cheever to co-author this book. They feel very privileged to have been the ones to bring this story to the world.
